My Name is Kris Andersen. I am a Danish artist/producer/dj. In my day to day job i teach Kids music theory and improvisation.
My debut into the music industry was in 1994 releasing a techno white label (Tundra) on a sub label to Belgian R&S records alongside legendary names such as Jam &
Spoon, Capricorn and Space Monkey. So I just had my 17th Year Birthday as a recording artist.
2. What made you want to become a music producer?
It really came very natural to me. Being raised in a musical family I ran a few bands in my teens (as the keyboard player) and landed my first record deal in the mid 80′s on late German label Electra. But we never got to release the album as the label was taken over by EMI who did not see us as a band releasing on their label.
After that “adventure” I started Dj’ing in popular 80′s new Wave clubs in Copenhagen and while staying in London the Acid Warehouse parties started to pop up having a huge life changing influence on my life and my music leading to a so far seventeen years long artist/producer career.
3. If you weren’t a producer, what job would you like to have had?
I would probably have dedicated my work hours to Graphic design.
4. What’s the hardest thing about music producing?
When it comes to my music I am a perfectionist and this is the hardest aspect in music producing to me. Never being 100% satisfied with the end result. But at the end of the day it is also what keeps me going always trying to push the limits of my talent and seek new ways in my music.
5. What’s the most satisfying thing about music producing?
Without any doubt the creative process. I am the kind of person who feels most at home working on projects. I am not comfortable if the work is too repetitive. I need to challenge myself and with music I have found a perfect way to stimulate my Imagination.
6. Who are your main musical influences?
Ouch this one is tough!
I have so many influences as I have lived through four decades of musical inspiration from the 70′s Rock/Pop, the 80′s Disco and New Wave, the 90′s House/Techno to the current decade of a melting pot of various electronic music garnished with a lot of rock, pop, down tempo and alternative in between.
So I am not able to pick a certain genre of decade as all decades have shaped my musical ear.
7. What is your all-time favorite song?
Again, ouch
I got a lot of favorite songs. But John Lennon’s “Imagine” or Japan’s “Ghost” are among my all-time favorite songs. When It comes to House I would say the Old-school classic Strictly Rhythm song “George Morel – Get On Down And Party (Original Mix)” or the later “Miguel Migs – Those Things feat. Lisa Shaw (Migs Salted Dub Deluxe)” released on Salted Music.
8. What advice would you give someone breaking into the music industry?
Take your time. Do not rush into releasing on the first best label offering you a deal. Find your own sound and experiment. If the music is good the rest will happen. And always check the agreements with a legal expert. Its money spent very well. If not the result could be you ending up with no rights or royalties. Do not be afraid to express your demands to the labels before signing a contract.
9. What’s your biggest achievement to date?
There are more than one achievements.
It would have to be Dj’ing in front of 25.000 people at the Danish Roskilde Festival. As well as travelling the world playing in Clubs, Festivals and on Mountains and Beaches. Also having my music aired on 18 national TV stations Worldwide and entering as number One on six of the TV European Stations Top 20 dance charts as well as kicking Petshop Boys and Oasis down on the UK Cool Cuts chart (Industry chart).
10. What or who is your guilty pleasure?
I do not feel guilty. Life’s too short! As long as you do not hurt anyone there is no reason to feel guilty.
11. If you could have any artist (living or dead) to appear on one of your collaborations who would you choose?
I would love to work with Björk.
12. What are your plans for 2012?
2012 look very bright. I am establishing my own small label where I will be releasing my own music. I also have several remixes in the pipeline and more and more gigs lining up in countries such as France, Norway, Poland, UK and hopefully US too later in 2012.
13. What hardware/software are you using to produce and dj with?
As a producer I used Cubase and Abelton live. And I also use Ableton Live when Dj’ing.
14. What would your dream set up be?
I am pretty happy with what I am using right now. But I would love to be able to set up a massive Live performance with mind-blowing visuals interacting with the music. Maybe someday
15. What is your favorite fruit?
Pine Apple.
