With props from numerous electronic music publications as ‘one to watch’ Richard Murray’s efforts as a DJ and producer aren’t going unnoticed. DJing since the early 90s with residencies in his hometown of Carlisle and in Manchester (where he went to university) things were ticking over nicely. A chance meeting with a label boss propelled Richard’s situation over night, some call it fate, others would call it the worlds best placed free-ad; Richard explains…
“Everything changed when I sold a TV to a stranger in my apartment block – we hit it off immediately as he was a northerner too and ended up drinking at mine until 5am the next morning.” The stranger was Matt Stuart at Ministry of Sound (ex Underwater Records.) “After seeing me spin in his apartment over the Christmas period he offered me the chance to be involved with a new project MoS were doing, they were launching their compilation title Housexy” with this Richard soon Ianded the role of touring UK resident for them which turned into worldwide touring resident and before long he was asked to compile and mix the Housexy compilations.
Not one to be pigeon holed Richard’s net spreads much wider than the Housexy vibe. Whilst perfectly at easy supplying those funked-up beats he also has a passion for the tougher-tech sound, which is mirrored in his productions. Dark and driving with big breaks, mixed in with an emphasis on the fun and the funk. Currently busy with Mos tours all over the globe Richard is enjoying the freedom it gives to play and perfect a wide variety of sounds from minimal to straight up house.
He sites being offered the opportunity to spin at Rulin MoS way back in 2001 as a relative unknown as one of his early highlights. As well stellar gigs including the headlining slot at the Aarhus festival in Denmark where he played the main stage to 2,000 people. Another note worthy moment was the message from the one and only Pedro Winter saying Richard’s remix of Zoo Brazil’s ‘Tecknik” track was “off the scale” – Pedro went on to include the re-edit in his Ibiza 2008 top 10.
His tracks and remixes have already been aligned with the tougher kids, with Richard’s efforts being snapped up to feature on various compilations including Toolroom Knights, MoS Underground Series (various editions including Miami 08 and Ibiza 08), Global Underground in 2009, and various comps on Gung Ho! amongst others. The rest of this year sees Richard playing in all over the globe, having already conquered Denmark, Colombia, Chile, Japan, Poland and even Kuwait to name a few, the coming months sees Richard as a permanent fixture on the world wide touring roster for MoS, hitting esteemed parties including Discoteque in Barcelona, Pacha in Moscow, Subliminal Sessions in London and a 5 date MoS tour of Brazil immediately followed by a 5 date MoS tour of India confirmed for October. As the magazines correctly predicted this is definitely one to watch…
